Tragedy at PNC Park: 20-Year-Old Fan Critically Injured After Falling from Stands During Pirates Game
What began as a celebratory evening at PNC Park quickly turned to tragedy on Wednesday, May 1, when 20-year-old Kavan Markwood of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, fell nearly 21 feet from the stands during a Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs game. The fall happened during the bottom of the seventh inning, just after Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead double, sending fans into a frenzy.
Witnesses say Markwood, shirtless and pouring beer on himself in Section 142, lost his balance and tumbled over a 36-inch railing behind the iconic 21-foot Roberto Clemente Wall, landing hard on the right-field warning track. Although the railing met all safety codes, the festive atmosphere quickly spiraled into chaos as emergency crews rushed in. As the crowd stood stunned and the stadium fell silent, no one could have predicted what would unfold in the moments to come.
