Inside a ‘Dystopian’ Apartment Block Where That Houses Over 20,000 Residence

A massive residential complex in China, dubbed the “Dystopian Apartment,” has recently gone viral on TikTok for its sheer size and futuristic design. Officially named the Regent International, the building is located in Hangzhou’s central business district and was designed by Alicia Loo, who also helped design the iconic Singapore Sands Hotel.

Standing at 675 feet tall and capable of housing up to 30,000 people, it currently shelters around 20,000 residents. The building’s S-shape spans up to 39 floors, depending on the side, and includes a staggering array of amenities like restaurants, pools, salons, grocery stores, and even internet cafes—all under one roof. For many, it’s a marvel of compact, urban living; for others, the sheer density and self-contained lifestyle have triggered comparisons to dystopian fiction.
