Jack and I had only been in our new rental for a day when our neighbor, Lindsey, came over with a tray of cookies. She introduced herself in a high-pitched, overly friendly way but quickly shifted to discussing neighborhood rules. Specifically, the HOA had a strict “one car per driveway” policy.
Although both our cars fit perfectly, Lindsey insisted it applied to everyone, including temporary residents like us.We politely accepted the cookies, dismissing her concerns as over-the-top. But three days later, I woke to the sound of tow trucks. Both our cars were being lifted off the driveway. In the cold morning light, I saw Lindsey standing in her bathrobe, sipping coffee and clearly relishing the moment.
